Who Are We?

We are your all volunteer Hawai'i consumer rights organization continuing the constant battle to protect you and your family from the often rapacious actions of the enormous monied corporations that have such great influence & control over our very lives.

Access to affordable health care, the insurance companies & banks, the petroleum & electric companies, Time-Warner (Oceanic Cable) and the the cell phone industry -- just to name a few of the truly challenging social justice and consumer issues we've tackled during that past 18 years. We've won some really big battles and have obviously lost some -- but we continue to persevere. Changing public policy related to issues where so much money is involved takes time and great patience.

As but one example, if you had car insurance in Hawai'i before 1997, you can well appreciate our successful 30-month political battle (1995-1997) for auto insurance reform. Hawaii's car insurance rates dropped from the 2nd highest in the nation to #20 in 1999 because of our work. Read the 1999 Pacific Business News story HERE.

Because of this landmark reform, in 2012 Hawai`i was rated "the third most-affordable in the nation". Read the 07-31-12 Honolulu Star-Advertiser article, We've got you covered: Car insurance rates are among the lowest in the nation, a report finds. HERE. NOTE: You will need to open up your browser window for more easy reading.

This and many other dramatic, positive changes in numerous important public-policy issues are directly the result of our work to inform, organize and involve Hawaii's enlightened consumers. We cannot do such heavy political lifting alone.

Please join us and support the work. In this era of uncaring, rapacious multi-national corporations, we need your active participation more than ever.

Mahalo! Thanks to your dedication and hard work, we indeed helped stop Big Pharma again (below). Governor Neil Abercrombie signed House Bill 65 into law as Act 226 on June 6, 2013! Hopefully this onerous legislation is laid to rest -- but they just might be back again in 2014 with another version. A special mahalo must go to Rafael del Castillo, Esq. who laid the groundwork and did most of the heavy lifting to see this legislation passed and signed into law. Read the complete bill history and testimony, etc. HERE

HAWAI`I HEALTH-CARE CRISIS ESCALATING

Treatment delays, outright denials and increasing co-pays by the insurance industry devastating to island's struggling middle class and poor

Aloha,

Many hapless sick or injured Hawai`i residents would tell you that you can thank your lucky stars if you are healthy and have not had to try and negotiate Hawaii's failing "health care" system. When illness or injury do occur, thousands of middle class and poor residents find themselves stuck in a seemingly endless bureaucratic nightmare of simply trying to get well. Make no mistake about it, the odds are heavy stacked against we consumers because of our rapacious, corporatized healthcare system. Americans and indeed we Hawai`i consumers deserve better!

Fortunately, a new task force is being formed by the 16-year old Hawai`i Coalition for Health (HCH) to address the growing crisis so greatly affecting Hawaii's sick and injured. Read their June 21, 2012, HCH media release HERE. Your participation now could one-day help you and yours. We will keep you updated as things progress. Mahalo for your continuing interest.

Taking On The Oil Oligopoly
By Ben Cayetano

For decades now, Hawaii's drivers have paid the nation's highest gasoline prices, at times paying as much as 60 cents per gallon more than the average Mainland price. The negative impact of these high prices on the cost of goods and services in Hawai'i cannot be overstated. MORE

Numbers show gas cap works
By Ben Cayetano

Less than two months ago, state House Majority Leader Marcus Oshiro issued a press release stating that the gasoline price-cap law had saved consumers $33 million.

Since its September implementation, House Energy Committee chairwoman Hermina Morita publicly stated the gas cap was succeeding. Last week, these two hard-working, honest and respected Democrats were made to look like liars by the House's sudden about face.

These two are victims of "finger in the wind" politics - a trademark of the House under Speaker Calvin Say's leadership. MORE

Without gas-price cap, sky would be the limit
By Ben Cayetano

A major disinformation public-relations campaign is being conducted by some gas cap opponents: The goal is to convince the public that Hawai'i's gas cap law is responsible for Hawai'i's rising gas prices. MORE
